Education Overview

   W
e want you to become more than a mere specialist; we also want you to become a consultant in whom we have instilled a continuing desire to keep abreast of all clinical and scientific developments.

We therefore heavily emphasize our formal teaching program because superb clinical skills alone “do not a compleat anesthesiologist make”. These skills have to be founded on a strong knowledge base that we aim to construct with a variety of didactic conferences, PBLD, clinical case discussions and journal clubs. Residents are given the opportunity to develop skill and practice in presentation. Once or twice a month, noted Visiting Professor from national and international universities visit the department and add depth and diversity to our educational efforts. Beginning residents receive a special introductory course of daily seminars in the months of July and August. They also receive a basic textbook of anesthesia upon which the course is based, and a book allowance to purchase other texts of their choosing throughout the residency.

You will be further supported in your learning process by a comfortable study environment in the departmental library that is well stocked with new and important textbooks, journals, videotapes, and audiotapes. The Health Sciences library is a further resource of outstanding quality that is easily available. Internet-enabled computer stations are available in several locations within the department for resident use. Furthermore, the department has allotted funds for all residents to purchase pocket PC’s, enabling them to utilize wireless access now available in our main operating rooms.

To make sure that you receive the proper education we have put a double process of monthly evaluation in place: frequent meetings of a clinical competence committee, of all attendings and the chief residents, and a monthly written test that is patterned after the first part of the examination administered by The American Board of Anesthesiology. You will receive regular feedback on your performance and guidance towards your goals.
