Stony Brook University Department of Anesthesiology

Journal Club

Journal Club is held monthly July through May. Meetings are held during dinner in nearby restaurants in a relaxed atmosphere. All faculty, residents, CRNAs and medical students/CRNA students rotating through the department are invited to attend.

Journal  club is a didactic tool to teach life-long learning skills.  It is a way to stay abreast of literature, to learn about the different types of literature and to learn to read the literature with a critical eye.

In 2007, we began a new three year syllabus. In the first year, we will explore different types of articles and how to evaluate them. In the second year we will read some of Anesthesia's Golden Oldies for perspective, and finally in the third year, we will turn to current literature.

Throughout the year we learn what is newly useful to practice, differences between case reports, observational studies, and randomized controlled trials. We explore the databases of Medline, Cochrane, and Guidelines.gov. Evidence-based practice is followed and study design is examined.
We begin each Journal Club with a 30 minute session to discuss 1 or 2 papers related to a topic. Topics include:

Case reports
One-sided observation studies
Descriptive statistics
Statistics of Response: curve fitting, correlation and regression
Comparitive statistics
Historical control papers
Randomized Control Trials
Current Randomized Control Trials
Meta-Analysis
Reviews
Guidelines and Consensus Documents.

A faculty presenter leads the topical discussion.  A junior faculty is assigned as leader of the seminar and a resident is  assigned as primary responder in seminar.

Journal Club is moderated by Ursula N. Landman, D.O. and Ira Rampil, M.D. is the Faculty Presenter.
